I wish gender were like that.

Someone wrote…

When I came out as gay, a couple people were surprised. They said they never really thought of me as being straight or gay – to them I was “just Jes.” I wish gender were like that.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Maybe gender is more ingrained into our lives than orientation — we don't have to imagine people in relationships, but we gender people all the time through pronouns and names. I think my friends never really saw me as a woman, but it's hard to get them out of the habit of using "she" and "her".

My favorite part about this is that because of the use of 'were', gender is implicitly plural. It makes me think.
