One or the other?

Someone wrote…

I have no gender. Everyone I speak to assumes otherwise and tells me to choose one or the other. One or the other of WHAT?

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

I don’t feel precisely the same, but something similar, I think. I was talking to some people online recently, and they were very, very concerned to know what gender I was. I told them:

“I’m just someone who doesn’t want to have to pick. No, wait, that’s not entirely correct. I’m someone who wants to pick different things on different days and in different situations.”

I don’t want to be non-gendered, but I also don’t want to be stuck to a single gender. I want the freedom to choose what mix of traits and presentation fit me on a given day, without being restricted by the expectations of others.

I had to choose for my job. Now I feel trapped. I wish people understood.
