The Last Time I Wore a Dress

This is an amazing book about a young person who, growing up gender variant in the eighties, is sent to several ‘mental institutes’ to cure her ‘problem.’ She is diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder and a few other things, too. Daphne (as she calls herself throughout the book) documents her struggles to fit in, her treatment (wearing makeup, dresses, etc.), the people she meets, and her life after she is released. The book includes flashbacks to ‘her’ past, and a detailed account of her family life. ‘Daphne’ is now Dylan, a transgendered artist with many amazing pieces. A good book for people interested in ‘gender,’ and anyone who would like to know of the errors in the Medical Community at the time and, yes, now. A great read, nearly impossible to put down.
