Evelyn

You can call me… Evelyn.

I identify as… A genderqueer feminist bio-boy gender anarchist.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … male pronouns are appropriate, but my wonderful man calls me his girlfriend, so the female ones are great, too.

I’m attracted to… people who are physically male; androgyny in any gender.

When people talk about me, I want them to… learn something, or teach me something.

I want people to understand… that minds that don’t open are like parachutes that don’t open. They don’t quite get the job done.

About Evelyn.
I have lived near Philadelphia my whole life and go to school in West Chester. I’ve always had a supportive LGBT community which is great. I’m currently a student and interdisciplinary artist pursuing life.

Recommendation: The Revenants

The Revenants by Sheri S. Tepper
book

This is one of my favorite books, ever. I first read it when I was a teenager, and eventually gave my dogeared copy to another teenager. I have bought and shared three or four copies over the years.

It is a unique book in that it is a fantasy story in which the protagonist is physically genderfluid, both male and female by turns. Also unique in my reading experience was that it was a book in which several of the characters are queer, and it was mainstream published, and nobody is treated as a stereotype. It’s about growing up in a world where you never quite fit in and in which love and sex are by turns magical and complicated and frightening.

I have recommended this book to many people, and it holds a special place in my heart, as girl who wore suits and hung out with boys in dresses. I might even say it’s like Tolkien for Queer kids.

Danny

You can call me… Danny

I identify as… a genderqueer trans man. My sense of gender fluctuates from androgynous male to femme male to who knows what depending on what side of the bed I wake up on, or something else arbitrary like that. I’m a polyamorous and pansexual queer boy with a pink mohawk who likes goth and nerdy boy styles. Oh yeah, and baby, I’m an anarchist.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … They is how I usually think of myself. Some people call me he. I hate anything else.

I’m attracted to… nerds and gingers and people with curly hair. Gender-variant people and femme or androgynous queer boys. Those with a good sense of humour (which usually means they’ve watched way too much British comedy too…) and who are kind and caring and willing to listen to me. Intelligence is a plus, and if you have a pretty voice I’ll probably melt. I like plenty of other people too, though!

When people talk about me, I want them to… respect me. I don’t seek anybody’s approval, but that doesn’t mean I want them to be rude to me either.

I want people to understand… that just because I paint my nails doesn’t make me “still a girl.” As if I ever was!

About Danny
I like top hats.

Whatever makes you happy.

Brad wrote…

It was Christmas Day, and I was wearing the earrings I had just bought. My little brother approached me, a disconcerted look on his face.

“You look a girl,” he said.

“Sometimes I feel like it,” I replied.

After a moment of comprehension, he hugged me. He said, “Whatever makes you happy.”

This experience still makes me smile.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Hijab

hijab

submitted by Izzy, the photographer.

From the Photographer:

I did a photo series called Gender Outlaws a few weeks ago. The series primarily explored how body language and appearance choices and sex communicated gender (pro tip: only the first one really counts), but also touched on issues of what types of body language we associate with which genders, (like passivity and aggression), how race can play into the power dynamics, and lots of other things.

You can call me… anything you want, though my given name is hard to pronounce.

I identify as… a butch genderqueer.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I couldn’t care less. Although sometimes, when I’m trying to pass as male, I cringe a little when my sister calls me “she” to other people.

I’m attracted to… intelligence, humor, bright eyes, and tattoos. A little feminine attitude is good too, even if the person is butch.

When people talk about me, I want them to… be honest.

I want people to understand… that I’m not having a gender-identity crisis. I just am in between. I feel very male some days, and very female other days. I like having a flat chest, just because it feels more comfortable — but I like my girl parts, too.

About —
I am merely a 20-year-old starting to figure out what’s really important, and what isn’t.

Not a paradox.

Someone wrote…

I’m a man. And proud to have and use the vagina I was born with.

I’m heterosexual. And proud to be Queer.

I’m masculine. And a proud Femme.

I’m not a contradiction, not a paradox, not an oxymoron. I’m just damn proud to be ME.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

For the first time, I can call myself beautiful and mean it.”

Question: Strategies to Deal with Ignorance.

Tor asks…

I’m feeling ineffective dealing with trans ignorance. In my circles, GBL is apparently fine, but not T. I’ve tried patient, educational responses to ignorant remarks, but recently I was told to stop being pushy with my opinion as others are entitled to theirs. I’d like to help people to understand that their comments are as discriminatory and unacceptable as racist or homophobic ones. How?

Please post your response in the comments below.

Recommendation: 100 Butches

kal recommends…

100 Butches
A book in the works

100 Butches is a book that Torontonian artist Elisha Lim is putting together. It’s full of drawings that are original in their simplicity, and offers snippets of butch-encounters, which come across much like entries from the artist’s personal diary. It’s a work in progress, but I can’t wait to read it all.

Too unacceptable.

Someone wrote…

I have never daydreamed about my wedding day because the only thing that comes to mind is how I long to wear a tuxedo and how that will probably be too unacceptable to everyone else.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Profile: Le Mademoiselle Christophe

Le Mademoiselle Christophe

You can call me… Elegant, or Le Mademoiselle Christophe.

I identify as… both man and woman at the same time.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I prefer male ones, and like to be “confused” with a woman and treated as such from time to time.

I’m attracted to… Females of all genders [from masculine to feminine] and androgynous, delicate males — no machos ;)

After all, it’s person, not biological sex, that matters :).

When people talk about me, I want them to… use my name or specific title in “unofficial” conversation, and be tolerant enough not to use hateful phrases or insinuations.

I want people to understand… that there’s more than one gender and it’s sometimes harmful to impose dichotomy on others.

Le Mademoiselle Christophe
Amateur photographer, model, inventor, bibliophile and dark independent music fan. Feminist, pro-LGBTQ, into queer/gender studies. Interested in fashion and beauty, too :). Loves corsets, make-up, high heels, leather, suits, tailcoats, furs, boots and tuxedos. Despises violence, conformity and lack of autonomical thinking, manipulation, stupidity and fundamentalism.
