Not relevant anymore.

Someone wrote…

After finding the courage to walk the streets in leggings and a long cardigan, I understood how foolish it was to wait for something similar to appear in men’s fashion. Phrases like “clothing choices for men are limited” don’t seem relevant anymore.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Question: Gender-neutral family names

Cydne asks…

We have gender-neutral pronouns now. Any suggestions for gender-neutral terms for brother/sister, son/daughter, niece/nephew, aunt/uncle and mother/father? Something more “queer” sounding than just “sibling” or “parent.”

Please post your response in the comments below.

Recommendation: Afghan Girls Growing Up as Boys

Dayle recommends…

This is a great New York Times article about the way many Afghan girls and their mothers deal with social pressures. Women are pressured to have boys, not girls, and girls are treated poorly. To cope, some mothers choose to pass their little girl off as a little boy. Outside their home, these girls grow up as boys.

I found it fascinating and you should definitely take a look.

As a human.

Someone wrote…

I think I’m finally starting to figure myself out. Not as a boy, not as a girl, but as a human.

Profile: Kaida

You can call me… Kaida.

I identify as… an office-dressed girly male who is actually just a slightly butch female.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … Mr.

I’m attracted to… feminine men, women that can pull off being a feminine male. Women. Good sense of humour. Intelligent. Outgoing. Musical. Travelling spirit.

When people talk about me, I want them to… be fooled and think I am male. Admire my looking better as a male than as a female. Accept me as what they want to, whether they agree with my masculinity or not.

I want people to understand… that feeling permanently gender-confused for the rest of your life really isn’t that uncommon. That some people wake up some days and think, “This is a really nice day to dress as a man/woman, yeah that will make me happy.” They should encourage people to express how they feel; stress is a killer. People need to understand that not everyone feels gender complacent.

About Kaida
I have nothing to promote but I am a student studying to teach English as a foreign language in multiple countries in Asia.

Question: Outed? Or not….

Leigh asks…

My mum found my binder. I don’t want to lie about it but she doesn’t know about my gender things (except that I stopped shaving my legs). She isn’t the most accepting of people, so what should I say to her?

Alex

You can call me… Alex (whether it be male or female Alex).

I identify as… female, male, genderfucked, labelfuck. Ultimately: genderqueer.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … “he” is good. So is “she.” Both are correct, and it doesn’t matter to me, but in most cases, a bigger smile will be achieved with male pronouns.

I’m attracted to… girls girls girls. Boyish girls — girlish girls — girls with short hair — girls with long hair — girls with boxers — girls without boxers — girls of all shapes and all sizes.

When people talk about me, I want them to… say nice things, or not say anything at all. You know, like we learned in kindergarten.

I want people to understand… that I am not fully male, yet not fully female. My binded chest accompanied by my female organs does not give you the right to think less of me. I won’t be offended if you call me sir, and I won’t be offended if you call me ma’am. Both are correct.

About Alex
I’m in theatre production. I’ve been known to bust out a song or two in my spare time. Music music music. It’s where it’s at.

Pushing the boundaries.

Someone wrote…

I am a female man. Sometimes I feel like I’m a female pushing the boundaries of what a man is; and sometimes I feel like I’m a man, pushing the boundaries of what a female is.

Recommendation: The gender-neutral pronoun

It is an interesting brief history of gender neutral pronouns over the past couple of hundred years.
