Punk rock.

Someone wrote…

I identify with music more than I ever did with masculinity and femininity. I wonder how many weird looks people would give me if I started telling people my gender was “punk rock.”

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

I was visiting some dear friends this weekend and it was decided that the gender of one of them is “Lou Reed.” So I certainly wouldn’t give you a weird look. <3

    Joel replied:

If your friend’s gender is Lou Reed, then I guess it’s okay for mine to be David Bowie.

    Molly replied:

This is Paige’s friend, my gender identity is in fact Lou Reed and my sexuality is David Bowie :D

If your gender identity is punk rock, would it be crossdressing if you decided to put on a cowboy hat and boots for the day? Would being a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n roll make you bigendered? :)

I have to say this is brilliant. If there’s someone on this planet who identifies this way, I want to meet them.

Then my gender is rock. I think I pull that one off already. If someone told me their gender was “punk rock” or “David Bowie” I would give them a high five.

This is soooo great!!! I totally know what you mean. Also, I think I might be alternative gendered as well…but then again, folk gendered sounds good too. Depends on the situation…maybe I’m musically-fluid?

    [Reply]

    Keanan replied:

I could go for that too. Maybe a mix of rock and alternative and world music. A mix of U2, Peter Gabriel, early Genesis, and some punk, Indian, and Celtic music thrown in (and a bunch of other stuff). I like being able to mix two of my interests music and gender into one.

I think I’m musically fluid as well, but I have to say my sexuality is Adam Lambert…

    [Reply]

    Kai replied:

I love this! I’m not attracted to Adam Lambert, per se, but I think that everything he stands for as a person is how I’d like my potential significant others to act/dress/be/whatever. “Always dare to sparkle harder” and “androgyny” are the two things that inform my sexuality and gender. Yay!

My gender for much of the time is Lady GaGa, and I totally identify with this.

    Joel replied:

I think I could be a Nature Boy and a Diamond Dog, definitely. But I guess that’s cheating since both songs are connected back to David Bowie.

When I first started to think about androgyny, it was because I noticed that in the emo scene, the first filter people used when discerning who they were attracted to (and who am I kidding, I was doing it too) was “emo”, and gender followed that. I like thinking of sexuality in terms of filters like that, with gender as a lower priority than an overarching culture or scene. These days, the same applies for me but in the punk scene.

My mom was able to believe I was a hetero female because I told her “nuh! punks have short hair” or “punks wear pants” when she’d say “that shirt is dykey” I’d say “nope its just punk”

I definitely think bowie as a gender works, dakota fanning in the runaways movie, totally captured it

also: I think bowie itself is a genderful variety of expressions http://www.dieselsweeties.com/archive/2137

    [Reply]

    Joel replied:

Definitely. Bowie is a wonderful shapeshifter. With David Bowie as a gender, you can be glamed out like Ziggy Stardust or as reserved as the Thin White Duke.

    kendall replied:

Indeed, thats the whole thing, if you feel like lightning bolts or eyepatches or just bein’ hunkydory then do it up sir or madame..or..rather..rebel rebel/rebelle rebelle? I have been awake forever, I got nothin’ but bowie is brilliant. cha-cha-changes couldnt possibly be an anthem for anyone on this site though, eh? ;)

I’ve had the urge to express myself as goth rather than male or female for years now, but I’ve seen what’s being done to those three labels and none of them really fits. So I’ve mixed my personal images of them with some black metal (my favorite music genre) and got myself something I really enjoy but have a really hard time explaining… and an even harder time expressing, especially with my mother insisting I shouldn’t be allowed to look like a “freak”.

This is brilliant! I have no gender, and probably the closest thing I have to a gender is my musical taste – metal. I *like* other music – but metal is always the fundamental.

It’s great to know that other people have been thinking this kind of thing as well.

I am afraid that my musical gender is just as scatterbrained as my biological one. Eclectic Esoteric

But I love Bowiesexual and wish I could claim it for my own.

I truly love and feel this comment so much. And maybe this is off-topic, but I hate it when non-punk people look at the punk community and label things “punk males” and “punk females,” because I think the truest aspects of punk are where those distinctions disappear. It’s hard for people to wrap their head around the idea that “I’m not doing this because I want to be a guy; I’m doing this because I’m punk.” I’m not in a pit to prove my masculinity; I’m in a pit because that’s where I belong. I don’t paint my nails because it’s girly; I paint them because that’s how I say “fuck you.” People who come in and split up punk, especially hardcore, into irrelevant labels are so infuriating.

Long live the indifferent super-gendered punks!
