A Faultless Logic

Y’ii wrote…

Yes, I have breasts and am genderless. Why yes, I was born with a Y chromosome. No, that does not make me “biologically” male. I still fail to see the faults in my logic.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Question: Feminism and Androgyny

Tea asks…

How do I reconcile my passion for feminism and my desire to be genderqueer? I support smashing gender roles to pieces and expressing diversity, but I secretly worry I only want to be androgynous because of the daily disrespect and hurtful media messages I get as a woman.

If I identify as something other than a woman – if I were to tell people “I’m neither a man nor a woman, because those words really mean hyper-masculinity and hyper-femininity to me, which are equally harmful, confining and were invented as means of oppression” – am I a traitor to my cause? In saving myself am I abandoning women, or lighting a path?

Gender Superhero

Submitted by Joseph, the model.

“This was a snapshot taken by my girlfriend at an Anime Club meeting at our college. It was a Halloween party and there were a lot of people there in costume. As with most Anime themed parties there were plenty of genderbending costumes. I felt left out, so I asked my friend to let me borrow her Zorro mask. This picture sums up everything about how I see my gender: ambiguous, brave, and 100% queer. We might not all have labels for our gender, and we might not all me a part of the binary, but thats OK, because we can be the gender superheroes who show others that its just as cool to be something altogether completely different.”

Recommendation: Zhang Jigna’s Photography

A reader recommends…

I’ve admired Zhang Jigna’s (see also http://zemotion.deviantart.com/) photography for a long time. And I was especially taken by these shots of Daniel Landroche. The blog post has a (brief) interesting bit of commentary on different people’s conception of beauty. These photographs in particular stand out to me for capturing a kind of elegance we don’t often see associated with male beauty. These aren’t the images of stereotypical male strength or of dominance that most frequently make up our images of men.

Profile: Evan

You can call me… Evan
love
hugbug

I identify as… a polyamorous pansexual g3 (gendergiftedguy). American of African descent. A member of the human species. An immortal soul of love and light.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I prefer he though recently I used hir when I was writing something describing a situation in my
past. Never thought I’d use the ‘other’ pronouns. But it was the best choice to encompass the complexity of my current perspective of my life and my past experiences.

I’m attracted to… beauty, intelligence, humor, ambiguity, accepting people, loving folk, those who express their love, creative types, all the arts, pregnant women, most anything new.

When people talk about me, I want them to… be honest, wonder, give up trying to figure me out, stop talking about me and do something nice for themselves or someone else. I’m sure someone needs a hug somewhere.

I want people to understand… that change is constant. Stasis is an illusion. Life is for living. You matter. We impact each others in ways we may not realize. There’s no such things as a small act of kindness.

About Evan
love
hugbug

I watch the world spin, I surf the winds, I walk the earth. I ride on buses, trolleys, in cars. I fall in and out of passionate infatuation all the time..I love.

I am a forever student. Insatiable knowledge seeker. Ambitious. Dedicated. My interests are many. I am every age I ever was. I like finishing things. I love new beginnings.

I am unapologetically, unashamedly, obsessively in love with Rent: The Musical, especially The Filmed Live on Broadway DVD! *big smile* I surprise myself.

Something I Hate:

Profile: Shay

You can call me… Shay

I identify as… Genderqueer and questioning along the transmasculine spectrum.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … they or he.

I’m attracted to… dykes, fags, butches, trans men, bois, drag kings, femmes, genderqueer folks.

And a good sense of humor.

I want people to understand… that gender and sexuality are fluid. Throughout my life I have identified as straight, gay, bisexual, queer, and pansexual. And while growing up, different people have identified me as a baby butch, a dyke, a heterosexual female, a femme, a drag king, a boi, a trans guy… and somehow throughout all of this, I have reached the place where I am today. Which is still delightfully and painfully unstable.

There is no way for me to articulate or play out all my seemingly contrary identities. With women, I have felt like a lesbian and a straight boy. With men, I have felt like a straight girl and a gay man.

Other people need to understand and allow room for complex identities. And sometimes people need to understand that my body, gender, and sexuality are none of their business.

And understand that these identities are simply departure points for my interactions with the world. They do not have any influence on my favorites types of movies, what kind of music makes me really happy, or who I want to be when I grow up.

About Shay
Just a little queer kid in a big, wide world.

Question: The strength to abide

L asks…

Where do you get your strength from? The strength to just be you whoever that is day after day in spite of others’ attitudes, assumptions or attacks.

Pieces of Art

Someone wrote…

We are all like a piece of art. There is no one right way to make art and, no matter what, all art is beautiful. Just like there is no one right way to be a human being. We are all independently beautiful.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Profile: Richard

You can call me… Richard, Richie, Rich, Bitch, Kitty, Venus

I identify as… half-and-half, the best of both worlds, androgynous-positive, ambigendered, a biracial Asian American

As far as third-person pronouns go, … anything goes. Male, female, gender-neutral…it’s all good!

I’m attracted to… men, about 90% of the time.

When people talk about me, I want them to… notice how many assumptions they make.

I want people to understand… my occasional facial/body hair doesn’t invalidate my gender identity, just like my white dad doesn’t invalidate my racial identity.

About Richard, Richie, Rich, Bitch, Kitty, Venus
I am an androgynous Laotian-Irish American politiqueer college student from Texas, living in Boston. I have a suitcase devoted to female (and Michael Jackson) impersonation. I’ve been compared to Roger, the alien from American Dad, in that I play with gender and have multiple personae.

Recommendation: Queer and Trans Prisoner Correspondence

Alison recommends…

I was hesitant at first, when starting to learn about it, but the more I read the more I became convinced: this is an Awesome Idea.

Apply for the program, and they’ll match you up with a queer, transvariant, bifluid, anything-out-of-the-GBLTQRSTX-hypercube-spectrum PERSON, from a prison from across Canada and the US. It’s your choice how often to write and your chance to make a difference and give some connections in a person’s life that is hell enough in prison without being ‘different.’
