    The theory is that society establishes “norms” that result in the greatest good for the greatest number. This may be generally true. Certainly, the societies with least resources are also the least tolerant of difference and diversity. However, in our modern world, such intolerance is neither necessary nor beneficial. The harm it creates far outweighs any benefit.
