Signal Hierarchy

Someone wrote…

I have long hair. I go by a girly name. I have girly mannerisms. Yet all it takes is a glance at my beard shadow for someone to gender me male.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

I have short hair, a beard, masculine mannerisms, a deep voice, and I wear mens’ clothing. I’m attempting to adopt a more masculine/neutral sounding name.

All it takes is for someone to see my chest, and I’m immediately female to them.
