“I am a queer of gender, African-Jamaican-Canadian feminist, survivor, poet and elder goth, living with non-visible health issues including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). I salute all my trans* folk and allies who celebrate gender expression and gender equality, especially those whose identities are complicated by other forms of oppression. I have love for you all.”
In a GSA meeting recently, I held up a mug by the handle and asked, “What am I holding?” Only one person accurately replied–“the handle” instead of simply “the mug”.
Labels are like mug handles; they’re part of our identities like a handle is part of a mug, and are useful for picking them up, examining them, turning them around. It’s nice to have a handle on your mug. But they aren’t the entirety of our identities–if you drop the mug and the handle breaks off, you can pick it up separately, after all. They are a small part of a much larger whole. I think it’s a good idea to remember that.
“You once featured me on genderfork. Since then I was approached by gamefroot.com who asked if I wanted to write a RPG for them, starring me! So we’ve come up with ‘LaQuisha’s Odyssey, an adventure so gay it’s beyond the rainbow’, where I want to capture, in an interactive format, the funniest parts of underground queer culture before they slip away. We’re running a Kickstarter too.”
As far as third-person pronouns go, … I’m okay with he, she, or xe.
I will not be offended if you misaddress me. You cannot read my mind and know what I am currently feeling. Relax.
I’m attracted to… people. I’m pansexual. If we encountered another compatible species, I might be omnisexaul.
When people talk about me, I want them to… speak honestly, but with respect.
I want people to understand… my being genderqueer doesn’t mean I intend to transition, and that it doesn’t change who am.
About Biri
I have been exploring and identifying with genderfluidity since I was 13 or so. I’ve always been “boyish” not so much in the tough tomboy way, but more in the lazy gamer way (haha). I’m happily in a relationship with a pre-transition MtF who is very lovely and accepts me for me day to day, as I flow between genders. She even bought me my first binder ^^
I finally have found the perfect metaphor to describe my gender identity. It is not just that I am gender neutral or all genders or no gender. Specifically what I am is any number of genders at any given time, but at heart, I am none of the above.
My gender identity is the wildcard in the deck. My lack of gender is exactly what enables me to embody any gender.
Just a few days ago I’d discovered a band from the 90’s called Magnetic Fields and have been listening to them a bunch.
I was surprised to see a song of theirs posted on my youtube feed from Domino records. The whole song can be summed up by a single line: “The only girl I’ll ever love is Andrew in drag.”
NB: The video features brief nudity. There is also a music-only version.
Indochine have quite a few songs about being gender-variant, including Playboy, 3ème sexe (literally translates to “third sex”), and Ladyboy. Revolution is kind of about gender. Juliette’s Silences and Unisexe are somewhat about gender, but focus more on relationships.
Indochine is an incredibly gender progressive band. Unfortunately, they do only sing in French. Still, their songs have a pretty clear meaning!
