To be Free to Express Myself

Someone wrote…

I’ve been thinking of coming out as genderfluid to most of my family on my 16th birthday and I don’t know what I want to do/say when I come out, I know I want to get my message across and get people to start using my pronouns (they/them) and for the people to use my preferred names instead of just my female name. but I’m not sure how to do this and I really want to come out and be free to express myself…

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

I am a bit older than you but have recently come out as genderqueer to my partner and kids, and it has been the scariest yet most liberating experience of my life. We are still dealing with some fallout as everyone processes the information, but for the most part it has been good. When I did it I read a letter that I had written explaining where I was coming from and had resources for them to reference at hand… I find Hank Green’s video helpful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXAoG8vAyzI (hope it is ok to post that). The letter allow me to be sure to say exactly what I wanted and the resources helps them understand what you are talking about and shows them it is an actual thing! It may take them a little while, so be as understanding and patient as you can.

Be free and happy and good luck!
