Cool picture. Reminds me of myself a bit as a little kid.

Keanan – Ditto! That’s pretty much me when I was 7. Just add a backwards baseball cap.

I really love these pictures, but I don’t get why being a tomboy or playing outside as a little girl has to be classified as playing with gender. Let kids be kids…Isn’t even posting it on here acknowledging it as something outside “gender norms”?

Hey, Mashenka! I thought about this photo for a while before I put it up, then decided to post it because of this article on Sociolgical Images. I feel that there’s been a trend in media lately that shows kids in very specific gender roles, and photos like this remind us that such images are not necessarily true. Personally I don’t feel that a girl playing in the mud is “outside the gender norm”, but I’m sure not everyone shares that opinion.
Also, the photographer originally titled this photo “Sugar and spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of”, which indicates that they were playfully acknowledging a stereotype and presenting a different kind of image than some people might expect.
Hope this helps!

Lately I have actually noticed some commercials with kids doing some more out of the gender norm stuff. There have been a bunch where girls have been playing ice hockey. Even though it’s not really out of the norm, hockey is traditionally a male sport and on commercials we would normally see a boy playing, not a girl.

Thanks for the explanation, Karen. They really are lovely photos. I agree that its absurd how the media seems to be forcing little kids into tighter and tighter boxes in terms of gender roles. Its like years of fighting to overcome them are going away again.
