Nolan Natasha is this awesome trans MC from Toronto. He talks a lot about a lot of different things—his transition, his gender, other people’s reactions to his identity, as well as things like sexual assault, relationships, and life in general. He says some really deep things, like: “Are you sure that you don’t want to be a guy? I don’t know a**holes, I can’t decide. I’m just 5, 10, 12, 13. It’s just a baseball cap and some rolled up jeans, if it corn cob and a button nose, would that mean I was made of snow?” and some really deep but also hilarious ways of describing gender, like “I can’t decide whether I’m hard or if I’m wet, but I guess I’m both.” His pretty bare beats make his amazing lyrics really stand out.
Two tracks off Ben’s album The Rebirth of Venus—”Boy With A Barbie” and “I’m A Woman Too”—do a wonderful job of breaking the gender binary, which is awesome because, as far as I know, he identifies as cis and straight.
After looking at the site theoneswelove.org I was taken in by Enid Crow’s. I was stunned by how happy this couple looked. I hadn’t read the bio for the pictures before and decided to read about their story. To my amazement Enid Crow is actually a woman that wears a mustache to attract her partner. Cute! I looked at her personal website and am still touched by the mix of femininity and masculinity that she portrays.
Andrea’s words are beautiful. I would quote one of her poems, but it’s hard to pick just one fragment! In the past I’ve transcribed these two poems on my blog. I don’t mean to self-promote my site, but I know that transcriptions are important to people who can’t hear or who can’t understand spoken English (I had a hard time understanding these poems at first — Andrea speaks really fast!). So here are the links to the transcriptions for the videos above: Swingset and Andrew.
Kit is a transgender artist who does slam poetry — “aka talking,” as he likes to call it. He performs alone and with musician Melissa Li as the Good Asian Drivers. I love how Kit can talk about gender in a funny way, but also address the rough parts of our gender-diverse lives.
Another video full of trans and androgynous genders is the Good Asian Drivers’ version of I Kissed a Girl.
Kim Pearson is a founder of TransYouth Family Allies and the mother of a transgendered teen. In this hour-long podcast interview by Donna Rossi of Equality Arizona, Kim Pearson tells her own story, advocates for TG children, describes the work of TYFA, and says one brilliant and moving thing after another.
This girl is going places, she is crazy hilarious. She is the queer daughter of a deaf mother and a Southern Baptist minister father. She went to an all-girls private college, and she’s pretty much… droolworthy.
She also has a Facebook group – you know, for ultimate stalking.
