Recommendation: Lifeworks

Alissia Rose-Pait recommends…

Lifeworks
A mentoring progrm

Lifeworks is a mentoring program for LGBTIQ youth, 12 – 24 in the Los Angeles area. Applicant youth are matched with trained (by the program) mentors.

They are in DESPERATE NEED for transgendered and transsexual mentors. While a trained male gay may get a mentee, or be on a waiting list for a long time, and lesbians are placed fairly quickly, transgendered mentors are so lacking that they have multiple kids waiting for each mentor. This is a minimum one year commitment.

Please help out our transgendered children and show them that they can succeed, that there is hope, and that there are people who understand and have or are walking the same path as them.

Recommendation: Sailor Sausages

Sx recommends…

tumblr_l2whsrzFVC1qbkguwo1_400

sailor sausages
artist’s blog

This artist is confronting identity in a really interesting way. Meeting somewhere between male and female, between beauty and ugliness, and at once dangerous and vulnerable, the character created embraces both the inner goddess and the outer chaos of the universe. Through use of elaborate embellishment and decoration, what is arrived at is somehow a place of stripped-down need; a place of attraction and repulsion within all of us, the place that we need to hide most from others and also that we need most to be embraced.

This is a wonderful collection of photos of dapper genderforking individuals. I have a feeling this will be my one of my new favorite pages in the very near future. I’m think I’m already hooked!

Recommendation: Regender

Regender
Webservice

Regender.com “translates” web pages by switching gender words.

Have you ever wondered…
What would the world look like if the two sexes switched places?
What would it look like if English had genderless pronouns?
What would it look like if English identified races the way it identifies gender?

Language has power.

Recommendation: Survey for Trans Bodies, Trans Selves

A reader recommends…

Survey for Trans Bodies, Trans Selves
a survey for trans or gender non-conformist people

There are so many unique genders here at genderfork! This survey is for trans and gender-variant people, supplying data to authors of a book that will be a guide for such people and their loved ones and allies.

The personal stories and information about each genderforker will greatly add to it, in fact, it would be incomplete without people like us. Not to mention how freaking fun talking about yourself is. Moderately long survey.

Recommendation: Aiesu (IS)

A reader recommends…

Aiesu is a manga collection of short stories about intersexed individuals and their lives. All the stories have the characters making a safely ambiguous place for themselves in a highly gender binary world and it filled me with such warm, fuzzy feelings! Especially the story beginning at chapter 13 which is why I posted a link to that one. They’re all self-contained so it makes no difference where you start.

Recommendation: DapperQ

A reader recommends…

DapperQ
A Website

This is a fashion site about queering “men’s” fashion. There are videos and columns about tying ties, buttoning buttons, doing hair…there are maps showing you where to find things, that you can add to. DapperQ is about opening up “men’s” fashion to multiple identities, so it isn’t just about passing either. Its about filling the void… the “dearth of information for those of us simply dressing to fight the good fight each day.”

Recommendation: Trans 411

dana recommends…

Trans 411
a nifty new community resource site

Some of people who brought you safe2pee.org have come together to launch a new community resource site called Trans411. We hope to use it to make knowledge of gender-variant/trans friendly people, places and groups more easily accessible.

When I explained the idea to a friend she called it “help for trannies and genderfucks” and that’s an apt description for what we’re trying to create. While we work out some bugs it’s limited in scope to medical providers (doctors, surgeons) and therapists, but we know there is much more to the lives of gender variant people than that, and we will expand it to include everything from cafes and support groups to people’s home-grown endeavors.

Keen Shoes
Shoes and Accessories

I like Keen shoes because they have a lot of androgynous styles in all sizes. Some shoes run wider than average, but they don’t offer wide sizes.

Feel free to check them out! And please share any shoe brands you know who offer non-gendered shoes – bonus if they come in wide sizes!

Recommendation: Box Turtle Bulletin

A reader recommends…

Box Turtle Bulletin
a website that covers world-wide anti-gay legislation

The Box Turtle Bulletin is a website that talks about various anti-gay laws and/or bills, etc. that are being passed world-wide. Personally, I like that fact that they publish word-for-word the proposed legislature, so you’re not just reading an opinion with a couple of quotes.

I think it’s important to know what’s up in the world, and this site promotes that sort of awareness.

Recommendation: Khaos Komix

Lanthir recommends…

Khaos Komix
a webcomic

Khaos Komix is the story of a bunch of people in their late adolescence figuring out their identites, and many of those identities include alternate takes on gender and sexuality. There are characters who are gay, lesbian, bi, trans, etc, all of which is handled very well.

To quote the author, “This comic contains an equal amount of straight and gay people, but unfortunately for straight people (who are already so underrepresented in the media), I really only write about the queer ones.”

This Wiki may be just a few articles, but since anyone can edit it, there’s plenty of potential. Scrolling down to the “Help Out” section and adding an article name works, too.

Recommendation: Queeries

Zory recommends…

Queeries
“A social network.”

First, let me quote:
“Queeries is a social networking alternative for queers, gender-rebels, and the people who love them!”
I really like this social networking website not only because it’s extremely trans* friendly [you have a good range of options to pick when it comes to what gender identity you have, pronouns you prefer, and so on] but because the people on the website are diverse, supportive, and basically awesome. The website just recently started so it’s rather on the small side, but that’s okay as it feels much more personal that way. Definitely check it out!

Recommendation: Sociological Images

Erica (the photo curator) recommends…

child

Sociological Images “encourages all kinds of people to exercise and develop their sociological imagination” in the hope that “public discourse will increasingly include a sociological lens with which we can all learn about social processes and mechanisms, critique social inadequacies, and design functional and equitable alternatives.” Though they strive to cover all aspects of society, their section on gender traces the history of pink, asks us if teddy bears can be considered manly, and shows us what happens when boys play double dutch.

Recommendation: Post Secret

Post Secret
A movement? A place for conversation? A place full of wonder and imagination?

PostSecret is a great movement. If you haven’t heard about it, I’d be surprised, because it has swept most of the internet by storm. The site draws the curtain back from the stage of humanity and gives glimpses of real life, from real people, to real people. Often dealing with controversial subjects, it really is a breath of fresh air.

And well, we’ve already had a few personalities from over there make appearances here, so there must be some mutual interest being addressed.
