Customising ourselves.
John Pickman wrote…
We are approaching a time when we can customize ourselves to suit who we want to be, who we need to be, and who we know we really are. When the software can be rewritten, the hardware can be upgraded, and we can live any and all of our dreams. And that is a wonderful thing.
How is this ability to rewrite the software and upgrade hardware of the human body both a bad and good thing? What kind of repercussions will this have on the human race?

I enjoy your question (Julian?), but myself, I’m really not convinced that our “ability to rewrite the software and upgrade hardware” (I think I know what you mean, but would you care to spell it out?) will make any difference at all. If what we’ve got now is a certain amount of conceptual freedom haven’t we always had that? What’s new is the plastic surgery. Big deal.
Isn’t it true that the limiting factor isn’t (and never has been) our ability to be free, but our choice to be free? And in order to be meaningful that choice needs to be remade, and witnessed, every day, in every social situation, by every person who truly cares.
