Backyard Barbeque

Submitted by Able Gender, the model.

” This sort of came together out of the blue. I had put on a fake moustache, my friend handed me his sunglasses, and I was drinking a coke. I call it “backyard barbeque” because it reminds me of the backyard parties my parents used to have, and it kinda looks like some of their friends.”

Question: Feminine but not quite?

Izzy asks…

I don’t feel 100% feminine but I don’t really identify as being androgyne, agender or masculine in any way.

It’s fairly hard to express and it’s really only something I’ve started thinking about relatively recently so I’m not sure how my identity will shift or what I’ll end up feeling comfortable referring to myself as.

I regard myself as mostly feminine but it just doesn’t feel quite right – I realise that this falls under the genderqueer umbrella; is there a specific term for individuals who feel the way that I do?

Please post your response in the comments below.

Profile: Destin

GFDestin

You can call me… Destin.

I identify as… an omnisexual gynephilic genderqueer polyamorous female atheist, feminist, vegetarian, and social justice warrior.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I don’t like how awkward gender-neutral pronouns are. She/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs are all okay – call me what feels comfortable to you. I told Facebook to use gender-neutral pronouns to describe me.

I’m attracted to… primarily females/women/femininity romantically, emotionally, and sexually; trans*/genderqueer folks sexually; everyone else besides cishet male mainstreamers emotionally and demi-sexually. Intelligence, emotional maturity, creativity, open-mindedness, individuality, independence, wisdom, insight, and vision.

When people talk about me, I want them to… see me as I truly am, not as they want me to be. I want them to care enough to want to get to know and understand the real me.

I want people to understand… Labels are simple. Individual realities are complicated. I’m complicated.

About Destin.
The pic is of me at 14. I’m 23 now, but I pretty much look the same. I started this site for gender and sexual minorities called Queer Social Justice. Our website is queersocialjustice.weebly.com – I’m Captain Jackelyn Harkness-Sparrow on there.

I identify as… Androgyne, versandro

As far as third-person pronouns go, … Whatever’s easiest for you

I’m attracted to… Logos over pathos, but I usually find some attractive trait in most people.

I want people to understand… I may have different tastes, but if you’re willing to put in the time, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better friend.

About TJ
I’m struggling with narcolepsy and trying to find a place in the LBGT+ community all while working to complete my MM in musicology.

The multiplicity of the human experience

“This growing collection of photos is a part of a larger multimedia piece that works to explore peoples’ relationships to their genders, bodies, and gender identities. It attempts to make visible the experiences of those within the queer community, most specifically, those falling within and outside of the binaries of gender and sexuality.”

Ah-ha moments

Someone wrote…

I’ve had a few “ah-ha” moments in this past year of gender identity exploration that have really helped me get past a bunch of fear and insecurities. For instance…

One of the first things I did was to get a pair of tall women’s riding boots (I’m a bio-male human person). When I wore them out in public I got such a wide range of comments and questions about them, and NONE of them had anything to do with them being women’s boots. Some people made horse jokes. Someone thought I was being “fancy”. Some guy at a nightclub said, “Sick boots, bro! Are those military?”

It clicked immediately for me that you just can’t control how other people contextualize what you are expressing. Everybody sees things through their own lens and, really, the only thing that matters is how I see myself through my lens. I don’t even care if somebody kinda makes me fun of me anymore. That’s their problem.

I would love to hear nuggets or experiences that other people have found especially valuable!

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Labels and Boundaries

Someone wrote…

I feel as if my body is not mine because it does not match the me on the inside. Feminine and masculine all at once. In between in a world of labels, I will continue to stretch my boundaries being myself.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Recommendation: You

CN recommends…

CN Lester — You
Anti-queerphobia music video from a genderqueer artist

I’m a UK trans/queer activist and artist, and my latest music video is a collaboration between friends and fellow activists to challenge the slurs we’ve been saddled with throughout our lives.

I wrote the song ‘You’ for my audiences as a thank you — so it made sense to make a video that would try to do the same thing. I was bullied badly all the way through school – biphobia, transphobia, and just in general – and I wanted to make something that addressed that head on. It’s a very simple concept — everyone in the video shows the viewer a word they’ve been called and hurt by, and then shows the camera a word that ACTUALLY describes them — but I think there’s something powerful in having to hold someone’s gaze as they tell you how others have tried — and failed — to dehumanise them.

More information on CN Lester’s work and background on Wikipedia.

The manifestations of the human body

Someone wrote…

I often find myself wondering why gender and sexuality are such an issue.

If someone is born female but feels male (and the other way around)… shouldn’t we, as a people, help this individual to become “healthy” or “whole?”

And if some one wants to be in between some place, what is it any of anyone else’s business? Why can’t people, at a minimum, mind their own damn business?

If you don’t like what other people choose to do with their bodies and lives, it seems to me to be your problem, not theirs, in any shape or form. Don’t look if it makes you uncomfortable because there are plenty of people that enjoy all of the manifestations of the human body and will do that which is within their power to assist others to feel comfortable in their bodies, emotions, and life. If someones gender or sexual orientation prevents you from wanting to know them then you are completely undeserving of said individuals attention.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?
