Question: How do I come out as Genderqueer?

Eli asks…

How do I come out as Genderqueer?

I’d like to use they/them/theirs pronouns but I’m too afraid to ask. I don’t want to complicate things and constantly have to explain myself to everyone I know. I can barely explain what being genderqueer feels like to myself, how do I explain it to others in a tangible way?

If applicable, what does being genderqueer mean to you?

Profile: Teacup

Teacup

You can call me… Teacup.

I identify as… Gender queer, asexual, bisexual, and gender blind.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I have no problem with “she.”

I’m attracted to… gay men, women.

When people talk about me, I want them to… be inspired by my positive attitude and healthy lifestyle. I also want them to see deeper than the exterior, of course!

I want people to understand… that even if you look very feminine on the outside, you can feel extremely androgynous on the inside.

About Teacup
I’m a personal Pilates trainer in New York City.

Recommendation: Fighting Stereotypes One Day At A Time

Shaun recommends…

Sophia Chung shares her experience being a woman in the largely male-dominated engineering world. She says she’s proud to be breaking gender stereotypes, and I think that’s awesome. :)

Profile: Nicole

Nicole

You can call me… Nicole.

I identify as… female, but I’ve been questioning genderqueer recently.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … female.

I’m attracted to… humans! I believe everyone is beautiful inside and out!

When people talk about me, I want them to… focus on my personality, niceness, humor (wittiness) and musical likings.

I want people to understand… I’m human and experience ups and downs like everybody else. I’m sensitive and also expressing myself is very much a challenge right now…but I gotta stay optimistic!!

About Nicole
I’m a nice, introspective, funny, and curious 24-year-old female, musically inclined. I can play a mean guitar, drum set and bass guitar :)

Recommendation: Why I changed my name

Emmett recommends…

This is a video that I made about my experience with my recent name change, and my own personal feelings on being non-binary. Posting it was kind of terrifying, but I’m so glad I did!

State of flux

Someone wrote…

I feel like I’m in a perpetual state of flux, never knowing where or who I will be next, and not feeling like I fit in with any group because I seem to be everything at once, yet nothing solid enough to put an identity label on. I search for consistency and come up with only change…

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

sturdy materials

Reposted via tomboy/femme style.

“I like clothes that are 130-150 years old. Old-fashioned clothes are made from sturdy materials and they fit better my body type than contemporary clothes, high-waisted trousers for example. I like hats, ties, bow ties and men’s clothes. Steampunk inspires me.”

Question: How to explain my pronoun change?

Eli asks…

I’ve decided I’d like to ask my friends to start using they/them as my pronouns, but I’m not entirely sure how to go about it.

I hate feeling like I have to explain myself all the time. I get the impression that whenever anything’s different people freak out and have to know WHY it’s not like they thought it would be, and sometimes life just IS.

How do I explain that to the people I interact with?

gender bound and pretty

Submitted by medina cardona, the artist.

“medina cardona is a genderqueer, Taino, artist with a disability, whose work focuses on the politics of race and gender. The two panels, “pretty” and “gender bound”, are 60″ x 48″ oil on canvas, done in black and white hues, representing society’s black and white binary of gender and gender role expectations, with a white wash background representing transgendered individuals who often face discrimination even within the LGBT community, and bordered in red to represent the loss of lives of transgender people due to violence.”

Gender blind

Someone wrote…

I have bounced back and forth identifying as bi-sexual, a-sexual and lesbian. I have been with very feminine men in my life (many bi and gay), and also with women, although now at 35 I am really wondering if I am trans.

I feel so androgynous inside and often say that I am gender blind because gender isn’t really important to me. The thing is, lately i’m falling for more and more gay boys and i’m really torn up about it.

It’s just where I feel most myself and most at home.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?
