My Journey – As Told Through Bras

Submitted by Celina / Cedric, the model and photographer.

“This collage is part of my finals art project. I chose gender roles as my topic, especially so, as I’m trying to find out if I’m trans or genderqueer right now.
You can see me wearing all bras I ever owned in pretty much the chronological order I bought them in. What I wanted to enact was a a transformation from typically female to typically male traits but it occurred to me in the making, that that’s exactly my own transformation and my own journey, that I seem to have been on longer than I realized.”

I love the straight forwardness of this project as well as the generally muted color scheme (which makes the bits that aren’t so muted have a greater impact). There is plenty of contrast on a value and masc/femme level which I appreciate. I especially appreciate that while the body positioning is similar in each photo it is not the Same precisely. And I feel like the final photo is the perfect ending. It feels as if the person wearing heels in the first photo has turned towards us in a more confrontational and ready position. The untied shoe softens this “period” at the end of the sentence- if that makes sense.
