Utterly Floored

I am basing my whole career path of the study of how gender is lived in the world, but sometimes I think about the concept of “gender” and am utterly floored by how little it makes sense to me.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

One Response to “Utterly Floored”

In other primate species there are some behavioral differences between males and females. Human society seems to have taken those differences and expanded them in every possible direction.

Many of our self-created rules are completely arbitrary, like “pink for girls and blue for boys”. Apparently the people who invented that were trying to sell more baby clothes. It worked, and then it took on a life of its own. Now we have separate toothpaste brands for boys and girls, in spite of the complete absence of any functional difference whatsoever.

All of this could be pretty innocuous if it weren’t for people who think it’s their right to enforce the arbitrary rules. Something that starts as silly fun can quickly become a basis for bullying, intimidation, harassment, and oppression.
