Androgynize Me

Androgynize Me is a tumblr filled with most excellent genderforkery. Even better, they seem to be pretty good about photo attribution!

Liked what I saw.

Someone wrote…

I cut my long hair and got a mohawk. Last night I looked in the mirror and for the first time since I can remember, I liked what I saw. It made me cry.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Profile: Proffate

Proffate

You can call me… Proffate.

I identify as… Genderqueer. I’m the king, the queen and in between!

As far as third-person pronouns go, … Anything goes. I’m happy to be referred to as a male but I always get a kick out of female pronouns. Just don’t call me an “it”!

I’m attracted to… People who are intelligent, kind, and on my wavelength. I make no distinction toward sex or gender.

When people talk about me, I want them to… Appreciate that I’m being true to myself by doing what I do — not rubbing it in people’s faces or trying to be a rebel. I’m just being me!

I want people to understand… I want people to realize that no one should have to “settle” on a gender. I identify as genderqueer because there are things I love about being a boy just like there are things I love about being a girl. Living my whole life as one or the other would just get boring!

About Proffate
I am an animator, illustrator and amateur musician who has been drawing since I was about three. I love expressing myself in any way I can; writing, drawing, puppetry, you name it. I guess it was only a matter of time before I began expressing myself in the way I dress and act as well.

Even Andy Warhol was a Genderforker

ANDY IN DRAG, originally uploaded by defekto.

The Getty gives a bit of background on a series of portraits that Warhol did of himself as a woman: “Andy Warhol enjoyed dressing for parties in drag, sometimes in dresses of his own design. He admired ‘the boys who spend their lives trying to be complete girls,’ so in 1981 he and a photographic assistant, Christopher Makos, agreed to collaborate on a session portraying Warhol in drag.”

Defekto says, “I love the photos of Andy in drag. I wanted to break the glass and shove this polaroid in my pocket. I took a photo instead.”

Really, really, really.

Someone wrote…

I really, really, Really, REALLY want to tell all the people I care about that I don’t identify as any gender so they can have a greater understanding of who I am, but I also feel like I can’t because as a “fellow cisgendered dude” it’s like my words carry more weight as a perceived ally than as an actual member of the transcommunity. I wish it wasn’t that way.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Profile: Hayden

Hayden

You can call me… Hayden.

I identify as… a human being outside the confines of gender, defined not by biology but by my capacity to love and be loved.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I like ‘ze’ and ‘hir’ but am fairly flexible. I understand that it is hard for most people to adjust to unfamiliar pronouns.

I’m attracted to… confidence, compassion, and activism.

When people talk about me, I want them to… respect who I am and where I’m coming from just the same as I will when I talk about them.

I want people to understand… that I am strong, resilient and more than any terminology that could be used to define me.

About Hayden
I am a transgender, Jewish, kind of crazy individual. I paint, write poetry, and play the violin and bagpipes. I currently live in a residential treatment program for young adults with mental illness.

Not a preexisting condition.

Someone wrote…

I saw a banner ad regarding women’s health care that said “being a woman is not a preexisting condition.” I understand what they meant, of course, but I still smiled at the thought that it could apply to gender issues.

What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Kids of Trans

Monica Canfield-Lenfest promotes COLAGE’s Kids of Trans (KOT) program, online community, and resource guide. She hopes to spread the word “that trans youth are not the only youth that are affected by transgender issues…and that we need resources, too.”

Recommendation: Future Shock

Mars recommends…

future shock

I put this link to this through the photographer’s site, not the brand’s, because that’s how I found it, and I wasn’t sure whose idea the shoot was. Basically, Future Shock Collective is a new clothing line / brand centered in South Africa but mainly selling in Europe that’s launching its first line shortly.
Chris Saunders shot the first images of this line (which I think is absolutely gorgeous) and decided to shoot both the men’s and women’s lines on a very androgynous-looking female model. And she definitely rocks the suit.

Profile: Amy

Amy

You can call me… Amy

I identify as… a bisexual, queer, postfeminist, androgynous, cross dressing, butch/femme, genderfucker.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I’m not fazed. Usually feminine but I like the sense of pride I get from their confusion.

I’m attracted to… feminine men, cute girls with short blonde hair, dreadlocks, blue eyes, andros, piercings, tattoos, girls in boys clothing, or no clothing at all. Wit, intelligence and creativity.

When people talk about me, I want them to… stop calling me a dyke, lesbian or fence-sitter.

I want people to understand… that just because I wear a shirt one day doesn’t mean I can’t wear a skirt the next, and that I dress for myself, not for other people.

Profile: Jeramee K

Jeramee K

You can call me… Jeramee K

I identify as… human.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … use whatever, they are mere semantics and barely affect me or how you should see or recognize me.

I’m attracted to… all that lies beyond gender and sex.

When people talk about me, I want them to… recognize that I am a person, not a gender, and in doing so disregard all preconceived ideas about gender and how that shapes their perception of me.

I want people to understand… it takes strength to truly be who you are inside, and that we should all strive towards a world where the above is accomplished in a truly free, non-commercial way.

About Jeramee K
My name is Jeramee K. I dream of a post-modern world where identity is shaped by more than what lies between your legs and people make value-based judgments of each other and the world around them.

Recommendation: Color Wheels

J.C. recommends…

Color_circle_(hue-sat)

color wheels
rhetorical device/metaphor

A lot of people (queer, straight, whatever) find the idea of thinking of aspects of gender in terms of a spectrum very intuitive. A color wheel is a spectrum represented as a circle with three or four primary colors rather than two extremes on a straight line.
So if you pick a color for masculine (lets say blue) and feminine (lets say pink) you still have yellow or green left over for another option (like nerdy, flamboyant, feminist, andro, neutral, etc.) plus purple for combos of masc and fem (lipstick butch, tomboy transvestite, whatever) and grey for none of the above.

Profile: Moone

Moone

You can call me… moone

I identify as… an abstract noun.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … female ones, if you please.

I’m attracted to… girls who look like boys, boys who look like girls. My beautiful girlfriend.

When people talk about me, I want them to… be nice.

I want people to understand… what’s “right” in this world, is only that way because it’s been decided. what’s right is what needs to be shown and what we can decide, just as those people before us, who created the whole concept of binary gender, did.

About Moone
I am in love. I am okay with most things.
